The importance of Christmas.

This week’s meditation is an overview of Christmas and why this is such an important event for Christians. The birth of Jesus is a worldwide celebration, which commemorates the birth of Jesus who is believed to be the Son of God. A collection of people was invited to this spectacular moment shared amongst the parents Mary and Joseph – Wise men and shepherds. There are several aspects to the Glory of this day that we are going to meditate on.

The main criteria of Christmas is to rectify the purpose of Jesus Christ coming down to this Earth. In Luke 19:10 it says ‘The son of man came to seek and save the lost.’ We are the lost and through the resurrection of Jesus Christ; we are able be saved by him.

Christmas is the Fulfilment of Prophecy:

Jesus became the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecy about the coming of the Messiah – who brings peace and salvation to the world. In Isaiah 7:14 ‘therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel.’ Many years later this prophecy was made to be true and Jesus was born to a virgin.

Christmas is the Symbol of hope and peace

The birth of Jesus is a symbol for Christians to hope in this broken world – the message of Christmas is one of peace, love and goodwill to all people. As Christians we believe that through Christ, peace with God is made possible and this peace is extended to all humanity.

Matthew 12:21 ‘In his name the nations will put their hope’

Christmas is the invitation to Emulate Christ:

Christmas serves as a reminder for Christians to embody the virtues that Jesus has demonstrated – humility, kindness, compassion, love and generosity. Christ was born to be shown as a role model, how Christians should live and especially during the Christmas season – serving others and showing love. Acts of Charity, kindness and selflessness is shown during the time of Christmas.

Christmas is a Joyful celebration of life & faith:

Christmas is a joyous occasion which is full of celebration, a reflection on Jesus’ birth, festivities and laughter. The festivities of Christians spread happiness and the message of Christ’s birth to all. Christmas is the first step in faith that we take as we see and understand the growth of Jesus.

‘‘But the Angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord’ ’’ Luke 2:10-11
