The Power of Prayer

Matthew 7:7-8

‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.’

Prayer is the lifeblood of our relationship with God. It’s how we speak to him, connect, and invite his presence in our lives. Prayer isn’t a ritual; it’s a conversation and a deep communication with the creator. This week’s word is to reflect on prayer being powerful, personal, and accessible to all.

Prayer is powerful

In this verse Jesus makes a promise to us; when we ask, we will receive, when we knock, the door will be opened. When we pray, we engage with the power of the Almighty, who can do immeasurably more than what we can ask or imagine.

When we pray, we are inviting God’s intervention into our lives. We need healing, guidance, provision, and peace – prayer is how we open the door for God to work in our circumstances. It’s not that God doesn’t already know our needs, prayer aligns us with his will and brings us into his presence.

Prayer is Personal

Prayer is personal because it’s not just about asking for things – it’s about connecting with God as a father. Jesus taught us to pray intimately, calling God ‘Father.’

In Matthew 6:9 it says ‘this, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name.’ This is an invitation to build a personal relationship with the Creator, where we talk to him as a child talks to a parent. Everyone’s prayer life is unique. How one person prays can be different from how someone else prays but no matter how we pray, he listens to our prayers no matter how simple or eloquent they may be. God understands our deep thoughts and feelings, and our prayers are a way of expressing those desires, fears, and hopes to him.

Prayer is an invitation to Spiritual Growth

Prayer strengthens our faith especially when we pray in challenging circumstances. When we bring out our requests before God and experience his faithfulness, our trust deepens in him and we become more reliant on his power than our own strength.

James 4:8 ‘Come near to God and he will come near to you.’

Prayer helps us align our hearts with God’s, shaping our desires, priorities, and attitudes to reflect his will. The more we pray, the more we grow into the likeness of Christ.
