Be the example

1 Timothy 4:12 – ‘Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.’

Many people believe that they must wait to reach a certain age, status or level of experience before they can make an impact. In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he see’s the struggle of Timothy and reminds us to be examples now. Whether you are young, old, new in faith or seasoned, God has positioned you to be a light – today.

‘You don’t have to wait’ – This is the heart of Pauls message, the world tells us to wait your turn however God says, ‘Now is the time’ (2 Corinthians 6:2). You are never too young, too inexperienced, or too insignificant to influence others for Christ.

Be the example in SPEECH – Our words have the power to heal, uplift or to tear down. In Proverbs 18:21 – ‘the tongue has the power of life and death’ which clarifies to us that we should speak in truth, in love and in grace.

Be the example in CONDUCT – How we live matters. In Matthew 5:16 ‘let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in Heaven.’ This verse connotes that actions speak louder than words, so we should live like Jesus – how he lived with integrity, kindness and humility.

Be the example in LOVE – Love is the mark of a true disciple. John 13:35 – ‘By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.’ Love isn’t just shown through words or shown to people who you like but love those who may resent or could be your enemies. Love your enemies, forgive freely and serve sacrificially.

Be the example in FAITH – Faith isn’t just belief – it’s trust and obedience. In Hebrews 11:6 ‘Without faith it is impossible to please God.’ Even when you don’t understand, choose to trust God’s plan. Let others see you walk by faith, not by sight.

Be the example in PURITY – In a world of compromise, purity stands out. Purity in mind, body and Spirit honours God. In Psalms 119:9 ‘How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.’ Guard your heart and stay close to the word.

You don’t have to be perfect – but you are called to be set apart. You don’t have to wait – be the example now. Let others see Christ in the way you speak, live, love, believe, and pursue holiness.
