John 14 : 1 – 3 

‘Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.’ 

 

Some contexts for this passage; On the night that Jesus was arrested, he talked with his disciples about the events that are yet to come. Knowing that his arrest, crucifixion and eventual ascension into Heaven would be a struggle and traumatic for his disciples but Jesus assured them to not be troubled. Jesus assures them ‘Peace I leave with you , my peace I give you ‘ ; ‘ Do not be afraid .’ 

 

Lets go through the 3 W’s – Who, What and Why

Who is Jesus talking to? 

At that current time he was speaking to his disciples; the next events yet to come is lifechanging and also a every essential part in Christianity. These disciples were with him for about 3 years and suddenly there are going to be drastic changes in their lives. 

 

What is this verse talking about? 

Jesus reassures his disciples to trust him, in God the Father and God the son. Jesus asks them to not allow their hearts to be troubled as his ascension will leave deep sadness to them but he prepares them for his second coming. ‘I will come and get you’ denotes that the love he has for his disciples letting them know that he will come back when the time is right. 

 

Why does Jesus say this? 

He says it to his disciples but also to us ; readers of the bible. He encourages us not to be troubled but to have faith and trust in God in difficult moments. For us to trust Jesus its not only having faith but a unity with Jesus Christ. Jesus promises a place in Heaven allowing the disciples to feel secure in Jesus’ departure. He promises eternity and to be patient for when the time comes but to have eternal life ; live like how Jesus did. This passage shows assurance and the promise for eternal life that Jesus is preparing us for. Jesus will come and get you once you put your full trust in him!
